LATEST UPDATE:
Refer to Post #3 below.

This error sometimes happens on my system after an update, if some of you have noticed:
https://forum.obarun.org/d/1584-solved-cant-startx-and-sent-back-to-tty-terminated-successfully

As a recap, my system is set up as a password-less autologin into XFCE.
Upon updating my system, I am stuck at the tty (but already logged in automatically).
Executing "startx" causes an Xorg error that displays "Server terminated successfully (0)".

As a side note, this error may not be related to the new 66 version.
This is because this has happened as early as November 23, Saturday.
I did not report it immediately as I hoped some random update somewhere will fix it.
The lack of a usable system has been circumvented by rolling back my system with Timeshift at the tty each time.
My 66 is on version 0.7.2.1-2, and upgrading to 0.8.0.0 previously, and now 0.8.0.1-1, has caused the same error irregardless.

I have managed to locate the issue, which is caused by the update modifying my .xinitrc to the wrong settings.
After updating my system, my .xinitrc has been modified to the following:

#!/usr/bin/bash

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

list=( $(ls -A1 /home/hyperspace/.66/conf/svscan@hyperspace | sort) )
for i in ${list[@]};do
    var=( $(</home/hyperspace/.66/conf/svscan@hyperspace/${i}) )
    for j in ${var[@]}; do
        export ${j}
    done
done

66 tree start

## Try consolekit
if 66-which -q ck-launch-session; then
    cmd="exec ck-launch-session $@"
else
    cmd="exec $@"
fi

## Select the session to start
${cmd} jwm

Compare this to my old .xinitrc:

#!/usr/bin/bash

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

list=( $(ls -A1 /home/hyperspace/.66/conf/svscan@hyperspace | sort) )
for i in ${list[@]};do
    var=( $(</home/hyperspace/.66/conf/svscan@hyperspace/${i}) )
    for j in ${var[@]}; do
        export ${j}
    done
done

66 tree start

## Try consolekit
if 66-which -q ck-launch-session; then
    cmd="exec ck-launch-session dbus-run-session $@"
else
    cmd="exec $@"
fi

## Select the session to start
${cmd} xfce4-session

In the last few lines after ## Try consolekit, you can see that dbus-run-session is missing.
Most crucially, under ## Select the session to start, the original xfce4-session that corresponds to my system was swapped to jwm instead!
Restoring these 2 settings has allowed my XFCE system to autostart normally, like before.

Is it possible to have system updates in the future preserve or restore the user's .xinitrc to their correct settings?

  • eric replied to this.

    The .xinitrx is modified by the boot-user@-66serv package

    It seems you need to modify your de or wm of choice using #66 configure -e youreditor boot-user@yoursystem then #66 reconfigure boot-user@yoursystem

    And for dbus-run-session, that should be handled by the %dbus@youruser service after you have already started dbus and boot-user@etc.

    However, maybe we can modify the package to backup the .xinitrc with pacman before installing boot-user@-66serv.

      sorry for my late answer.

      Wat-now However, maybe we can modify the package to backup the .xinitrc with pacman before installing boot-user@-66serv.

      this is how boot-user@ service works. If an .xinitrc file exist it rename it with the suffix .backup.

      Hyperspace Is it possible to have system updates in the future preserve or restore the user's .xinitrc to their correct settings?

      Yes, use the 66 configure command and use 66 reconfigure when you are done. As long as you use the 66 configure a user environment file with your value taking precedence over the upstream environment file is created. This file is never touched/modified by 66. So, when an update is made, simply do 66 reconfigure and your previous setting continue to be applied.

      Thank you Wat-now and eric!

      Just to be sure about the commands:
      First, I run #66 configure -e <youreditor> boot-user@<yoursystem>, resulting in the file below:

      ## Uncomment it to use a display manager.
      ## Can be any display manager as long as the
      ## corresponding frontend file exist on your system
      ## e.g sddm,lightdm,...
      ## It also prepare the .xsession file.
      #DISPLAY_MANAGER=sddm
      ## Uncomment it to use a console tracker.
      ## Can be any console tracker as long as the
      ## corresponding frontend file exist on your system
      ## e.g consolekit,seatd,turnstile,...
      #CONSOLE_TRACKER=consolekit
      ## Create and mount the XDG_RUNTIME directory
      ## at /run/user/hyperspace [yes|no]
      XDG_RUNTIME=!yes
      ## Command to use in your .xinitrc
      ## to launch your desktop e.g.: openbox-session.
      ## If commented the .xinitrc file is not configured.
      DESKTOP_CMDLINE=!jwm

      On the last line, I change DESKTOP_CMDLINE=!jwm to DESKTOP_CMDLINE=!xfce4-session and save the file.
      The above would be a one-time modification that is saved permanently.

      On the other hand, each time I perform a system update, I run #66 reconfigure boot-user@<yoursystem> and my previous settings will take precedence.

      Regarding dbus-run-session, I think this command needs to be preserved in my .xinitrc file as well.
      If I remove the command, I can no longer click to mount external devices in Thunar File Manager.
      So, the %dbus@<youruser> service alone is not sufficient.
      I am not sure if #66 configure and #66 reconfigure will take care of this command, as I don't see an entry for it (or how to write it in) after running #66 configure -e <youreditor> boot-user@<yoursystem> as shown above.

        Hyperspace I am not sure if #66 configure and #66 reconfigure will take care of this command, as I don't see an entry for it (or how to write it in) after running #66 configure -e <youreditor> boot-user@<yoursystem> as shown above

        The service will take care of the DESKTOP_CMDLINE value to apply corresponding of the change you made with 66 configure.
        You can find the original .xinitrc file used by the boot-user@ service at /usr/share/66/service/boot-user/configure directory. So when you reconfigure the service this file is took and value of the corresponding key from you environment file(66 configure) is replaced. At the end of the process you get (if you have consolekit on your system) exec ck-launch-session dbus-run-session xfce4-session.

        you mean he can add DESKTOP_CMDLINE=!dbus-run-session xfce4-session?

        you can do (apart the '!' mark which is not handled) .
        https://git.obarun.org/66-service/arch/boot-user/-/blob/master/module/configure/configure?ref_type=heads#L97 and https://git.obarun.org/66-service/arch/boot-user/-/blob/master/module/configure/.xinitrc?ref_type=heads#L28
        as you can see the configure script replace the DESKTOP_CMDLINE by the one given by the user. At .xinitrc https://git.obarun.org/66-service/arch/boot-user/-/blob/master/module/configure/.xinitrc?ref_type=heads#L21 the ${cmd} is replaced by dbus-run-session if the consolekit package is installed. So if you do what you want to do the final result will be exec ck-launch-session dbus-run-session xfce4-session

        Thank you!
        Just checking if this is the correct way to write it inside 66 configure, including the quotation marks and space, as well as excluding the exclamation mark?
        DESKTOP_CMDLINE="dbus-run-session xfce4-session"
